About Earth Day 2027
Earth Day is held on 22 April each year, which in 2027 is a Thursday. It began in the United States in 1970, when an estimated 20 million Americans — around a tenth of the population at the time — took part in demonstrations for environmental protection.
That first Earth Day is widely credited with driving the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency later the same year, along with the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act. It went international in 1990 and is now coordinated across more than 190 countries.
The date has since become a common moment for climate commitments: the Paris Agreement was opened for signature on Earth Day 2016, when 175 countries signed on the first day.
