About Christmas Day 2026

Christmas Day is 25 December every year, and in 2026 that is a Friday — which for many countries creates a three-day weekend running into Boxing Day on the Saturday.

The date was fixed in the fourth century and does not track any recorded birth date; it was set to coincide with existing midwinter festivals around the solstice. Orthodox churches following the Julian calendar mark Christmas on 7 January in the Gregorian calendar, so a significant part of the world celebrates it nearly two weeks later.

It is the most widely observed public holiday on earth, marked in more than 160 countries, and drives the largest annual peaks in retail, travel and electricity use in much of the northern hemisphere.

The counter runs to midnight UTC on 25 December 2026. Christmas morning arrives in your own timezone, so your local midnight may land several hours either side of the moment the timer reaches zero.
